The Lamborghini Gallardo sits under the Murcielago
in the companys model line-up, and it was designed to compete
with the likes of the Porsche
911 Turbo and the Ferrari
360 Modena.
Named after a famous breed of fighting bull, Gallardo is also
Spanish for 'gallant'.
A much more practical supercar than the Murcielago, the Gallardo
does without the trademark scissor doors of most Lamborghini
products, and rearward visibility is far better than previous
models.
Powered by a 4.2 litre V10 derived from a straight 5 cylinder
from parent company Audi, the Gallardo produces around 500 horsepower.
The higher spec Gallardo SE makes 520 hp.
Power is sent to all four wheels is via either a traditional
gated 6 speed transmission, or a 6 speed electro-hydraulically
controlled auto-clutch manual "E-gear". This advanced
system uses two paddles behind the steering wheel to move up
and down the gearbox, performing shifts far quicker than a conventionl
automatic transmission.
