At the 2010 Geneva Motor Show Renault unveiled their latest
addition to the family, the Wind Coupe-Roadster.
Back in 2004 Renault displayed a concept
roadster called the Wind. This concept was designed to gauge
public opinion and see if a production model was feasible. Sadly
however the production car's styling has evolved to the point
of being almost unrecognizable from the concept - which was
stunning.
From the front the 2010 Renault Wind gets the familiar Renault
face but with a slightly more chiseled appearance. This is by
far its best angle. From the rear the Wind almost looks like
a fat Tesla Roadster. And
it doesn't get much better even with the roof down. Time to
raise the roof is a moderately impressive 12 seconds. In the
lowered position, the roof panel rests above the rear cargo
area, meaning that storage volume is always the same.
The Wind is built on the same platform as Clio II Renaultsport,
and its chassis is perfectly suited to the power outputs of
the two engines that are available for the car, the 1.2 TCe
100 and the 1.6 VVT 133hp.
When equipped with the 1.6 16V naturally-aspirated powerplant,
the Wind accelerates from zero to 62 mph in just 9.2 seconds
and boasts a top speed of 125 mph, yet combined cycle fuel consumption
has been contained at 40.3 mpg (equivalent to CO2 emissions
of 165g/km).
This flexible, high-revving, 1.6 VVT engine produces 133hp at
6,750rpm, with maximum torque of 160Nm at 4,400rpm.
According to Renault, the Wind is aimed at motorists who want
a car that is not only distinctive and compact, but also convertible
and practical enough for everyday use.
