The
2006 Lotus Europa S, a Grand Tourer inspired two-seater car
revives the Europa model dropped by Lotus many years ago.
The Europa S sits above the Exige and Elise in the Lotus line up, and below the new
Esprit due 2007.
The Europa S, a less 'hardcore' car than the Exige and Elise,
is intended as more of a tourer and practical alternative. The
Europa is a much more refined and luxurious car compared to
these racing refined models.
In order to deservedly wear the Lotus Europa badge, the car
was designed around a lightweight is better philosophy, this
means the essential use of advanced high tech materials including
an extruded and bonded aluminium chassis, composite body panels
and a very advanced composite energy absorbing front impact
structure.
Europa S practicality features over the Elise includes a larger
luggage compartment and easier cabin access, possible with lower
chassis sides and a higher roof line. Inside, refinements include
a full leather interior, driver and passenger airbags and carpets
all as standard.
The mid-engined Europa S will deliver high levels of performance
from a high torque (263 Nm or 194 lb ft at 4200 rpm) 2.0-litre
turbo engine producing 200 hp (149 kW or 203 PS) at 5400rpm.
Production of the Lotus Europa S is scheduled to begin in July
2006 at the Lotus manufacturing facility at the Lotus Headquarters
in Hethel, Norfolk, UK. The Europa S will be sold in all markets
where the Lotus brand is present, except for the USA and Canada.
