The second incarnation of the Lotus Elan was introduced in 1989.
The new Lotus Elan was different to any other Lotus product
in that it was front wheel drive. Many Lotus and sports car
purists were put off by this fact, despite the fact the Elan
actually displayed immaculate handling characteristics.
The bodywork of the Lotus Elan was designed by Peter Stevens
and the suspension was tuned by ex-F1 driver John Miles. Power
for the Lotus Elan SE came from a 1.6 litre turbocharged
four cylinder engine.
Lotus only created the Elan for two years before financial problems
forced the company to abandon the project. However in 1994 when
Bugatti bought Lotus from GM a further 800 Lotus Elans were
produced. Called the Lotus Elan S2 the new car had better suspension,
bigger wheels, a new top and new seats.
