After
Volkswagen revealed the new Scirocco the next question was...
When will the performance orientated version arrive? Well for
Europe the answer is the end of 2009. Other market releases
are still to be announced or confirmed.
The Scirocco R was originally shown back in 2008 in pre-production
form as the Scirocco Studie R
at the Bologna Motor Show. Both cars share a very similar body
kit and identical 18" (optional 19") alloy wheels,
although the rear spoiler of the Scirocco R is considerably
smaller than that of the Studie R and the air inlets in the
hood have been deleted for the production car.
The Volkswagen Scirocco R is the most powerful and fastest version
of the Scirocco ever. Up front is a turbocharged, 2.0 litre
four-cylinder engine which produces 265 horsepower and 350 Nm
(258 lb-ft) of torque. This is mated to six-speed manual gearbox
as standard while a twin-clutch DSG semi-automatic transmission
is available at extra cost. The front-wheel-drive layout (which
uses the new XDS electronic limited slip differential) means
that the extra weight penalty of an all-wheel-drive layout is
nonexistent and the overall weight of 1,330 kgs ( 2,932 lbs)
reflects the drive train choice. Due to the potent engine and
light overall weight the Scirocco R can sprint to 62 mph (100km/h)
in just 6.5 seconds, top speed is an electronically limited
155 mph (250 km/h).
The chassis of the VW Scirocco R has also been upgraded and
features stiffer and lower suspension with new springs and dampers.
Bigger brakes have also been fitted. Up front are 345 mm discs
while at the rear 310 mm discs are equipped.
The interior of the Scirocco R benefits from a pair of deep
and supportive sports seats and a thick rimmed multifunction
sports steering wheel with perforated leather top and bottom.
'R' logos adorn the headrests and steering wheel to let the
passengers know they're in something a little bit special.
