The Morgan Motor Company has been pretty busy over the past
few years developing all-new models. Especially when you consider
this is a company which has been more than happy to produce
one of their models to more or less the same recipe for nearly
75 years!
However just like the Aero 8
and Aero Supersports
models - which are retro-chic with modern underpinnings - the
new Morgan EvaGT is a stunning piece of automotive design which
blends old world style with contemporary engineering.
The was unveiled at the 60th Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance,
held in California.
The Morgan EvaGT is a four seat coupe which takes its styling
inspiration from British sports saloons of the 1950s, including
the Bristol 400 and the Frazer Nash BMW 328 - although neither
of them is as fluid nor shapely as the EvaGT.
The EvaGT's chassis is a bonded aluminium unit which is both
light and strong. The chassis is actually a revised and improved
version of the one used in the Aero Supersports - a car which
has competed in international GT3 racing, so it should be good
through the corners.
The bodywork of the Morgan EvaGT is delicately and precisely
formed from aluminium. When creating the bodywork the craftsmen
use a technique originally developed for the aircraft industry.
This hand finished method makes for smoother more accurate panels,
and means the shut lines are tight and level. In order to keep
the overall shape of the car as sleek as possible, the designers
have incorporated items like hidden windscreen wipers and flush
mounted door handles.
Powering the Morgan EvaGT is a BMW-sourced 3.0 litre twin-turbocharged
straight-six engine which produces 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft
(400 Nm) of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels through
either a 6 speed manual or automatic transmission. Zero to sixty
is estimated to be dealt with in 4.5 seconds, and the top speed
of the EvaGT is 170 mph.
