The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series is a twin-turbocharged
monster based on the SL65 AMG.
The 2009 Black Series SL65 is powered by a 6.0 litre twin-turbocharged
V12 engine which develops 661 hp at 5,400 rpm, and 738 lb-ft
of torque. Sending the power to the rear wheels is a 5-speed
automatic gearbox equipped with AMG's speedshift software which
can change gear in just 250 milliseconds. This engine and transmission
setup allows the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series to hit
60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. Top speed is 199 mph.
The performance of the SL65 AMG Black Series is further improved
thanks to significant weight savings over the standard SL65
AMG. Over 250 kgs (550 lbs) have been taken off the total weight
due to extensive use of lightweight materials like carbon
fiber and aluminium. A fixed roof formed from carbon fibre
instead of a folding hardtop, and a stripped down interior also
help trim the fat. Yet despite the weight savings the interior
of the SL65 AMG Black Series remains well equipped and stylish.
Visually the exterior of the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series
is striking. Gone is the usual Mercedes subtlety, and in its
place are wide arches, air intakes, spoilers and diffusers.
Starting at the front, the SL65 AMG Black Series features air
intakes running the entire width of the deep front bumper. On
the hood and behind the front wheels air vents help extract
hot air from the engine bay, while further underlining the cars
performance potential. The massive rear arches flow seamlessly
into the bodywork and rear bumper. Sitting atop the trunk lid
is a retractable rear spoiler providing downforce over the rear
axle. Embedded into the rear bumper is a stylish air diffuser
which incorporates the twin tailpipes.
The 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG Black Series also features a
wider track - obvious from the extended arches, an adjustable
suspension setup and larger brakes.
