The Ducati 748 Biposto was built from 1995 to 1999. Although
the Ducati 748, as a model, remained through to 2003 before
being replaced by the Ducati 749.
Aesthetically almost identical to the Ducati
916, the 748 Biposto features the same frame, suspension
and brakes as the 916. Almost the only chassis difference between
the two was a narrower rear wheel.
The engine was a 748cc V-twin, eight-valve DOHC desmodromic
unit. It developed 97 horsepower @ 11,000 rpm. Power delivery
was best at higher revs, and many riders find that the 748 is
a more involving and entertaining ride than the larger and more
iconic 916.
As the Ducati 748 has been around for a while now, reliability
issues are starting to appear. And in fairly large numbers.
It can be an expensive motorcycle to keep in good condition,
and bikes without a good service history are best avoided.
On the other hand, if you're looking for one of the best looking
sports bikes ever built, and want it all packaged up in one
of the best track-suited frames ever designed, then the 748
is worth a try.
