The famous eccentric Howard Hughes' Flying Boat, the Spruce
Goose, was the largest airplane ever built. It was almost
six times bigger than any aircraft of its time. And to
this day it remains one of the world's largest aircraft.
The H-4 Spruce Goose was 218 feet (66.6m) long, and had
a wingspan of 319 feet (98m). It was designed as a long
distance cargo aircraft to provide an alternative heavy
transport to ships which were suffering heavy losses in
the Atlantic during World War Two. It was finished in
1947 after the war ended and made just one historic flight
and was never flown again.
