The
Toyota 1/X (pronounced "one-Xth") concept first
went on display at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.
The 1/X, like the Toyota Prius, is a hybrid powered vehicle.
However the 1/X concept weighs just a third of the Prius,
and offers double the fuel efficiency.
Power for the Toyota 1/X comes from a 500cc fossil fuel
engine working in conjunction with an electric motor which
can be charged from the mains. Both the engine and the
electric motor are located beneath the rear seat giving
the 1/X a mid-engine, rear-drive configuration.
The body of the Toyota 1/X is formed from lightweight
carbon fiber reinforced plastic which offers excellent
rigidity and strength for minimal weight. And while the
styling is bland an unattractive, visibility is superb.
But it's the environmentally friendly powertrain, not
the looks, which are important on the 1/X concept.
