Cadillac isn't really in the business of making compact,
efficient vehicles for the urban commuter. But as the
world's automotive manufacturers all start to develop
more environmentally friendly vehicles, even those who
specialize in heavy, luxury barges have to start offering
more economical alternatives. The Urban Luxury Concept
is the first step toward a compact vehicle for Cadillac.
The Cadillac Urban Luxury Concept has all the hallmarks
of current Cadillacs. Namely crisp style lines, angular
lights both front and rear, a prominent chrome plated
grille with the Cadillac badge front and center, and a
luxurious interior equipped with a range of high-tech
gadgetry.
Clay Dean, Director of GM North American Advanced Design
said of the concept: "The Cadillac Urban Luxury
Concept celebrates its scale with intelligent, innovative
content that makes it unique regardless of its size. It
has a small exterior footprint, but is roomy inside."
The Cadillac Urban Luxury concept is comparable in size
to popular commuter cars found in the cities of Europe
and the Far East. It seats four, with easy access to all
seats available via a pair of scissor-type doors that
extend outward and rotate forward when opened. The layout
of the vehicle creates a roomy passenger area, which is
trimmed in top quality materials and features next-generation
interactive technology. Touch-pad screens and projected
readouts take the place of most traditional gauges and
serve as the audio and climate system controls - a design
feature that helps open up the interior for greater passenger
space.
The Cadillac Urban Luxury Concept uses a hybrid drivetrain
which features a 1.0 litre turbocharged 3-cylinder engine
backed up by an electric motor. Cadillac's engineers have
calculated that in a vehicle the size and weight of the
Urban Luxury Concept this drivetrain could offer 56 mpg
in the city, and 65 mpg on the highway.
Frank Saucedo, lead designer of the Cadillac Urban Luxury
Concept said of his latest creation: "There is
no minimum size for a Cadillac driving experience. The
Urban Luxury Concept's interior reflects the 'smaller
is better' aesthetic that permeates the world of technology.
And while this design philosophy reflects what's going
on in the world around us, it also has a more practical
use when it comes to the Urban Luxury Concept: It creates
more interior space."
The conventional "center stack" of controls
is replaced by a divided interface that creates more space
at the forward section of the interior. A pair of projected
readouts flanks a large, prominent analog speedometer
reminiscent of a high-end time piece, assisted by a high-definition
head-up display.
The technology behind the unique touch pad controls of
the Cadillac Urban Luxury Concept is ergonomically tucked
around the steering wheel to deliver real-time feedback
for an efficient commute. The right-hand touch pad is
hidden until deployed or detached by the passenger, who
can interact online without compromising the driver's
control. Via the onboard network, a passenger can request
destination directions or audio playlists be integrated
in the driver controls. Also woven into the system is
OnStar with advanced voice recognition interaction, which
allows the driver to do more without taking his or her
eyes off the road or hands off the steering wheel.
