Improves Only 3 MPG in 80 Years, 03rd August
2009

Despite all the new technology, cleaner fuels and government
regulations, researchers at the University of Michigan
Transportation Research Institute have calculated that
in the past 80 years vehicles on America's roads have
increased their efficiency by just 3 mpg.
The study calculated the distance driven and fuel consumed
for the entire US fleet of vehicles including cars,
motorcycles, trucks and buses between 1923 and
2006. The researchers were then able to compare fuel efficiency
on US roads at any time.
The low point was 1973 when the fuel efficiency plummeted
to a shocking 11.9 mpg.
