The Fiat 500 Abarth is the "off-the-shelf" performance
versions of the new Fiat 500. The other performance variants,
like the 500 Abarth EsseEsse, 500 Abarth Assetto Corse, and
Abarth 695 "Tributo Ferrari" are all a bit more special
- but at a price.
The 500 Abarth was unveiled only one year after the new Fiat
500 arrived in European dealerships in 2007. The 1.4 litre 4
cylinder engine is fitted with a turbocharger two intercoolers
which takes the power up to 133 hp @ 5,500 rpm and torque up
to 206 Nm (152 lb-ft) @ 3,000 rpm. The power is delivered to
the front wheels through a 5 speed gearbox.
Chassis upgrades for the 500 Abarth include a lowered suspension
setup, ventilated front brake discs, and a power steering system
with a SPORT button which adds more weight to the wheel - while
at the same time upping the torque output of the engine from
its standard 180 Nm (130 lb-ft) to 206 Nm (152 lb-ft).
The interior of the Fiat 500 Abarth gets a few upgrades over
the standard car. The changes include a turbo boost gauge, a
gear shift indicator, some shiny foot pedals, and Fiat's Blue&Me
navigation system.
The Fiat 500 Abarth has received considerable praise in a number
of areas, including - and you may or may not agree with the
first one - chic, retro styling, a fun and exploitable chassis
which is not too hardcore for daily driving, and a punchy and
responsive engine.
