Since its introduction the Subaru Impreza STI has always been
a performance bargain. Capable of leaving far more expensive
and exclusive cars in its dust, it dominated the WRC for years
and has been a hot favorite for many track day enthusiasts.
Now Subaru has teamed up with another company famed for its
racing and engineering know-how.
The Subaru Impreza STI CS400 was developed in conjunction with
the British engineering company Cosworth. And its not just a
simple air-filter and sports exhaust upgrade either. Cosworth
have pretty much replaced all the moving bits in the engine.
There's new high performance pistons, new connecting rods, high-pressure
oil pump, and sturdier gaskets and bearings. To take advantage
of the upgraded internals the ECU has been recalibrated, and
the turbocharger and wastegate modified. And yes, there's also
a custom sports exhaust.
All these changes result in a power hike of nearly 100 horsepower
- taking the total to 395 hp @ 5,750 rpm. The torque figure
stands at 398 lb-ft (535 Nm). The 0-60 mph time has been slashed
from 5.2 seconds to a blistering 3.7 seconds. Top speed is an
electronically limited 155 mph.
The chassis of the Subaru Impreza STI CS400 has also been worked
over through a joint effort by Cosworth, Eibach and Bilstein.
It sits 10mm lower to the ground, has an 18 mm wider track,
and also larger AP Racing brakes.
Styling tweaks include a revised front bumper, Cosworth badges,
unique 18 inch wheels, and a new rear spoiler. The interior
gets Recaro sports seats, gloss black trim, and some more Cosworth badges.
Unfortunately all this performance comes at a price. Only 75
examples of the Subaru Impreza STI CS400 are scheduled to be
built. All for the UK market, and all carrying a £49,995
($70,000) price tag.
