Mitsubishi
FTO GP V6
The Mitsubishi FTO was an attractive-looking front-engined, front-wheel
drive sports car produced from the mid-nineties up until 2000.
Originally the Mitsubishi FTO was only intended for the domestic Japanese
market, however its popularity as a grey import into several right-hand
drive countries led to it being officially imported and sold through
Mitsubishi dealerships in the UK, Ireland and New Zealand.
The FTO's name stands for "Fresh Touring Origination", a
nod to the Galant FTO from the '70s.
The Mitsubishi FTO's tiptronic transmission option called the INVECS
II, used a computer control system to monitor the drivers gearchanges,
the transmission then adapted its shift points to suit the driving
style adopted by the driver.
As well as the transverse V6 engine option there were also lower spec
4 cylinder FTO models offered. Several special edition models were
also produced.
Despite only ever being offered with a FWD layout, the Mitsubishi
FTO's styling gives it a classic wide-rear arch RWD appearance. During
its short production span the FTO won several awards, including Car
of the Year in Japan, and Best Used Sports Car by the British Auto
Trader awards in 2007.
