The
Elfin Type 5 is a lightweight sports car which was revealed
at the 2008 Sydney Motor Show.
Unlike the Elfin MS8 Clubman
and MS8 Streamliner which
are V8 powered cars the Type 5 is powered by a turbocharged
four cylinder engine.
This unit develops 260 horsepower @ 5,300 rpm, and 258 lb-ft
of torque @ 2,500 - 5,300 rpm. Transferring the power to the
rear wheels is a five speed manual transmission.
Underneath the minimalist, yet smartly styled fiberglass body
of the Elfin Type 5 lies a computer designed multi-tubular spaceframe
with laser cut tubing and brackets. The aluminium inner panels
are also laser cut.
The front suspension of the Elfin Type 5 is handled by fully
independent wishbone units with coilover shock absorbers. At
the rear are also independent wishbones. Both front and rear
wheels are adjustable for camber and toe.
The braking is taken care of with 298 mm vented discs and two-piston
calipers up front, and 290 mm discs at the rear.
Inside, the Elfin Type 5 features a full instrument cluster
with speedometer, tachometer,
voltage, oil pressure and fuel level gauges. The leather wrapped
race-style
steering wheel is mounted to a four-way adjustable steering
column. Supportive sports seats round out the interior appointments.
