The
De Tomaso Guarą was the last project to come from the founder
of De Tomaso, Alejandro de Tomaso.
The Guara was first revealed at the 1993 Geneva Motor Show,
the Guarą was available first as a Coupé and later as an open
top Barchetta. The Barchetta was identical to the Coupe except
it had no roof or proper windscreen, just a small air deflector
protecting the passenger and the driver from the elements and
it had to be driven using a helmet. The third model was the
Guarą Spider, a convertible with a small canvas top, only five
were produced. The first Guara's were sold in 1994, production
ceased a decade later. In total around 40 coupes and 10 Barchetta's
were also produced.
Fibreglass, Kevlar, and other Composites made up the body shell
of the De Tomaso Guara, under this was a tubular spaceframe
chassis. The suspension uses independent upper and lower wishbones
with pushrod front and rear end suspension. The Guarą is known
for its highly agile handling which makes it a handful for the
novice driver.
