The
Bertone styled Alfa Romeo Montreal was first seen at the Expo
67, held in Montreal, Canada. The original concept was not called
the Montreal, but the car quickly became known as such.
In 1970 the first production Alfa Romeo Montreal was revealed
at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show. The Montreal was powered by a
2.6 litre V8 engine which developed 200 horsepower @ 6,400 rpm,
and 175 lb-ft of torque @ 4750 rpm. This was mated to a ZF 5-speed
manual gearbox driving the rear wheels. This drivetrain gave
the Alfa Romeo Montreal a 0-60 mph time of around 7.4 seconds,
and a top speed of 137 mph.
The suspension and drivetrain of the Alfa Romeo Montreal comprised
of double wishbone suspension with coil springs and dampers at the
front, and a live axle with limited slip differential at the
rear.
Unusual and striking design features of the Alfa Romeo Montreal
include the headlights which are partially covered by slats,
these retract when the lights are switched on to increase the
beam distance. The six parallel openings behind the side windows
hide vents for airing out the cabin, while also providing a
styling feature.
The Alfa Romeo Montreal was discontinued in 1977. In total just
under 4,000 cars were produced.
