The Pagani Zonda R which was revealed at the 2007 Geneva Motor
Show is the ultimate Zonda model, a final swan song before the
new car arrives (currently codenamed the C9).
Only 16 Pagani Zonda R supercars will be produced, and by making
the R for the track only Pagani have managed to skip out all
the engineering hurdles and compromises needed to make it road
legal. 15 of these cars will be offered for sale with the remaining
unit staying with Pagani.
For power the Pagani Zonda R uses the same Mercedes-Benz V12
but with modifications it now achieves 739 horsepower and 524
ft-lbs of torque, and with a dry sump it can be fitted lower
in the car therefore lowering the center of gravity.
Like the engine, the chassis of the Pagani Zonda R is modified,
so much in fact that the R shares little with its roadgoing
counterparts, the Pagani Zonda F and C12S. The wheelbase of the Zonda R is longer
by 47mm, the overall length has grown by 394mm, the track is
50mm wider, there are new front and rear subframes and the gearbox
is positioned transversely to allow the engine and gearbox to
move forward helping balance weight distribution.
The Pagani Zonda R is also acting as a test bed for some of
the new mechanicals which will go into the next Pagani model,
namely a custom 6-speed sequential transmission and manual clutch - which could allow for the
introduction of a paddle operated transmission in the new car.
Inside the Pagani Zonda R trim levels are well above what could
be expected in a car bound for the track, gone is the distinctive
glass roof in order to make way for the prominent central snorkel
feeding the engine, the seats are bespoke
race units and a roll cage has appeared. A digital readout is
also provided in the Zonda R which shows the weight acting on
all four wheels individually and will allow the driver to see
downforce changes
in a measurable manner.
The wheels of the Pagani Zonda R are made from forged magnesium
and wrapped in slick racing tyres, attachment is done by a single
central nut.
When the Pagani Zonda R reaches the track it could compete against
the likes of the Ferrari FXX and Maserati MC12 Corsa.
