The BMW X5 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV, although BMW describe it as an SAV (Sport Activity Vehicle) rather than an SUV. The first X5's went into production in 1999, this original model was officially called the E53 and remained in production until 2006 when it was replaced by the E70 version of the X5.

To keep development costs down the E53 BMW X5 used many parts and electronics from the BMW 5 series.
