Every so often at the South Pole base willing participants undertake
an initiation ritual into the 300 club, possibly the most extreme
Roman bath ever. Before the fun can start the outside temperature
must be -100°F. Then the sauna is turned up to a suffocating
200°F, all willing recruits enter the sauna and sit inside
until they can't take it anymore. Then they run out wearing
their birthday suits and make a mad dash for the geographic
south pole marker before returning to the warmth of the base.
The resulting rapid 300°F temperature change is what gives
the club its name. |
