Every so often at the South Pole base, willing participants
undertake an initiation ritual into the 300 club - possibly
the most extreme Roman bath ever. Before the fun can start the
outside temperature must be -100°F. Then the sauna is turned
up to a suffocating 200°F, all willing recruits enter the
sauna and sit inside until they can't take it anymore. Then
they run out wearing their birthday suits and make a mad dash
for the geographic south pole marker before returning to the
warmth of the base. The resulting rapid 300°F temperature
change is what gives the club its name. |
