Sadly there are only about 320 Mountain Gorillas left in the
wild. They are found only in Central Africa in the region where
the borders of Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda
meet. Unfortunately, this area's political situation is highly
unstable, gorillas and tourists have in the past been killed
in the conflict.
Despite the regions insecurity, the number of travelers
to see the gorillas is on the rise. Ugandas Bwindi forest
is the safest place to see these fascinating primates.
Gorilla tracking is strenuous. If you travel with a tour operator,
an experienced guide and armed guards will escort you through
dense, often wet undergrowth to the gorillas location. A safe
distance from the gorillas is maintained to ensure both your
safety and the Gorillas, as they are not as immune to common
viruses we encounter daily and an infection could kill an entire
group. |
