Crankshaft
The
crankshaft is the main shaft of the engine that converts the
reciprocating (up and down) motions of the pistons and rods
to rotary motion and delivers it to the front and rear of
the engine. To convert the reciprocating motion into rotation,
the crankshaft has bearing surfaces, called crankpins, whose
axis is offset from that of the crank, to which the "big ends"
of the connecting rods from each cylinder are attached.
