Bleed
Nipple
A
bleed nipple, also called a bleed screw, is a valve on a brake wheel cylinder, caliper, or other hydraulic
component that is opened to purge the hydraulic system of
air.
On a vehicle braking system, bleed nipples are fitted to each
wheel to enable air to be bled from the brakes. This procedure
needs to be done after servicing in order for the hydraulic
system to work correctly and to prevent loss of braking ability.
Bleed nipples on engine cooling systems (not common on today's
cars) typically take the form of a bolt with a hole through
the middle. The bolt is threaded into a hole on the vehicle's
cylinder head which goes into the water jacket of the cylinder
head. When the bleed nipple is loosened, antifreeze enters
the cooling system and the increase in fluid pressure pushes
air out through the hole in the bleed nipple. When liquid
begins to flow out the passage the bleed nipple is closed
tight.
