Air Bypass Valve

An air bypass valve (sometimes abbreviated to ABPV or ABV) is a backfire suppresser valve which is used in air injection systems.

During times when the engine creates high vacuum pressures, such as deceleration, the air bypass valve vents any excessive air out of the system to prevent the engine from backfiring.

At other times, the air bypass valve sends air to the exhaust manifold and out the exhaust pipe. On vehicles with a three-way catalyst, the air bypass valve sends air to the oxidation catalyst once the engine has warmed up.

Air bypass valves are also known as anti-backfire valves, gulp valves or diverter valves.
