Front Steering
Active
front steering is mechanism that varies the steering transmission
ratio electronically in direct relation to the speed and style
of driving and road conditions. AFS enables a continuous automatic
adjustment of steering characteristics such as steering effort,
dynamics, and comfort depending upon the driving situation.
It was first introduced by BMW as on option in its E60 5 Series
and E63 6 Series models.
With AFS in place under normal road conditions at low and
medium speeds, the steering is more direct, calling for less
steering effort on the part of the driver, and making the
car more agile in city traffic or when parking. At high speeds,
the steering becomes less direct, giving better directional
stability. When cornering at high speeds, or when making sudden
movements, AFS stiffens the steering by monitoring increases
in the yaw rate and changing the steering angle accordingly.
