The Icon A5 is a innovative sport aircraft from ICON,
a California based company founded in 2005.
Since the FAA's regulation changes in 2004 created the
new Light Sport Aircraft category, ICON Aircraft's sole
purpose has been to create a vehicle offering simple,
comfortable recreational flying for almost anyone.
The Icon A5 is based around a strong, lightweight carbon
fibre airframe. Powering the aircraft is a pusher-style
propellor mounted to a 100 horsepower Rotax engine, which
can be fueled using both aviation or automotive gasoline.
To make the A5 more practical Icon's engineers have equipped
the aircraft with a number of features to cater for a
variety of needs and uses. Folding wings (which can be
operated either manually or automatically) mean the A5
can be transported with ease on public roads. It also
significantly reduces the space needed during storage.
An optional retractable undercarriage, coupled with a
smooth underbelly, mean the A5 is capable off taking off
and landing on both land and water.
The exterior design of the Icon A5 is characterized by
stylish, clean lines and a sleek profile. This modern
feel is also apparent inside where the designers have
styled the cockpit using sports car interiors as inspiration.
The result is a contemporary, intuitive layout and superb
visibility. Features of the two-seat cockpit include a
sophisticated GPS navigation system, MP3 audio system
and LCD display system. Multiple storage compartments
are a handy addition.
Safety features of the Icon A5 include predictable flying
characteristics, a low stall speed, propeller guard, and
wing angle-of-attack indicator. An optional safety feature
of the Icon A5 is a complete aircraft parachute which
can be deployed in the event of serious malfunction or
emergency.
