The Yamaha FC06 was a prototype vehicle which was created
to explore the capabilities of a fuel cell powered scooter.
Designed in 2003 the Yamaha FC06 used an electric motor
to drive the rear wheel. The drive system including fuel
cell stack, fuel tank and battery was housed in the semitransparent
body.
The FC06 used a Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) system
which runs on water and methanol. This solution works
well on a compact lightweight vehicle like the FC06 because
there is no need for a converter or heavy pressurized
hydrogen storage tank.
Performance for the Yamaha FC06 was similar to a regular
50cc moped. Further features of the scooter included a
stand alone 300 watt AC power outlet, GPS navigation and
a rear view camera with handlebar mounted display screen.
