The Volkswagen Concept S is a creation of Mark Kruse,
a junior level industrial designer working for Formation
Design Group in Atlanta, GA. and a 2008 graduate of the
University of Cincinnati.
The VW Concept S is a versatile, modular and affordable
proposal for city dwellers. The vehicle was designed around
a scenario of consumers who lived in a large city with
limited street parking, and hobbies that required the
storage of a truck or SUV. They need a vehicle that offers
maximum storage in a compact size, and is more ecologically
responsible than past vehicles.
The party trick of the Concept S is the fact it can be
used in three different configurations. Stage 1 is a small
hatchback similar in size to the Toyota Yaris. It boasts
over 50 cu.ft. of storage space while closed. Using lightweight
materials and thin modular seating, it has maximum storage
in a very small area.
Stage 2 is a small 2 door Pickup. A truck bed section
hidden within the walls of the vehicle adds storage space
and functionality. The bed is covered with durable recycled
High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and offers multiple tie-downpoints.
Lift open the hatch and fold down the seats increasing
the storage space to over 87 cu.ft. Large enough to store
3 adult size bikes, or 12 bags of mulch, or six large
suitcases...etc.
Stage 3 is an open air storage vehicle. The driver simply
lowers the tailgate, lifts the hatch, and folds down the
seats, allowing them to haul nearly anything they can
secure to the vehicle bed.
Powering the VW Concept S are four individual electric
motors, one in each wheel hub. To further reduce the impact
on the environment the vehicle is painted with water based
paints.
