Not content with just receiving Audi's hand-me-down in
the form of the Exelero - basically the old Audi A4 but
with a SEAT badge - the company is now going after the
Audi A3's shape - although the IBE is much, much smaller.
Seat are calling the IBE concept a sports coupe, but it's
clearly hatchback based - they've just sealed up the hatch.
But then it's not really the styling that's supposed to
be the defining feature of the concept, it's the electric
powersource, a first from Seat.
Mounted up front is an electric motor which produces up
to 102 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque. The lithium-ion
battery pack is located at the rear to help balance out
weight distribution. The all-electric drivetrain allows
the IBE to get to 62 mph in 9.4 seconds. Not fast, but
easily able to keep pace with traffic both inside and
outside the city.
With the IBE concept Seat is showing that even lower budget
manufacturers are well on their way to developing production
vehicles which have usable full-electric drivetrains.
James Muir, President of SEAT said: "With the
IBE we are demonstrating that, for SEAT, electric mobility
will always be combined with excellent design and outstanding
driving fun. The IBE is in the best SEAT tradition of
always offering the boldest and most youthful cars in
its class. On top of that, our first electric concept
car represents the continuation of our strategy for the
future. Along with the huge success of the highly efficient
Ecomotive models, we are now working intensively on electric
mobility; and that includes plug-in hybrid drive, as well
as an all-electric vehicle."
It's just a shame they didn't come up with a body design
which was more exciting or original.
