The Saab Phoenix showcases the next-generation
of Saab cars. |

At the 2011 Geneva Motor Show Saab pulled the covers off
the concept vehicle which they say showcased design features
and technologies which will shape the next generation
of Saab cars.
Called the PhoeniX, the concept is eye-catching and a
bit odd, just how Saabs used to be back in their glory
years.
Based on a new architecture which will form the basis
for the next Saab 9-3 model, the PhoeniX concept introduces
something Saab calls 'aeromotional' design. This is essentially
the name for their new design language.
Jason Castriota, Saab's Executive Design Director said
of the concept: "The PhoeniX establishes a new
reference point for the future of Saab product design.
It symbolises a renaissance of the innovative spirit and
passion that drove Saab to build its first car. We're
now taking the visual DNA forward with what we call 'aeromotional'
design, adding emotion, power and fluidity. This design
aesthetic will shape and differentiate future models in
the Saab portfolio."
The Saab Phoenix features a sleek, teardrop profile and
a dramatic jet canopy-inspired glasshouse. The slippery
shape of the car means it has a low drag coefficient of
just 0.25cd. In addition, the designers and engineers
have also explored the potential for airflow management
through the use of distinctive, side-mounted 'winglets'
located just behind the cockpit.
The doors open in a butterfly motion to reveal the 2+2
interior and driver-focused layout. The PhoeniX concept
also debuts Saab's all-new IQon infotainment and communications
system.
Saab IQon is an innovative car communications platform
which leverages Google's Android operating system. Based
on 'open innovation' with third-party service providers
and applications developers, it comprises an embedded
computer platform which seamlessly connects to the internet
when the car's ignition is switched on. The touch-screen
provides access to audio and entertainment streaming,
online navigation, onboard music storage and downloading
of applications.
Powering the Saab PhoeniX concept is a hybrid drivetrain
which consists of an electrically-driven rear axle coupled
to a sophisticated 200 hp, 1.6-litre petrol turbo engine
driving the front wheels. Using a six-speed manual transmission,
projected combined cycle fuel economy and CO2 emissions
are 56.5 mpg and 119 g/km.
