The Rinspeed ZaZen concept car was first revealed to the
public at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show.
The design company Rinspeed, are well known for tuning
Porsche models and producing radical concepts, and the
ZaZen is no exception. Powered by a Porsche
997 Carrera S engine the ZaZen concept is capable
of getting to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds and hits a top
speed of 182 mph.
But the real attraction and inspiration of the ZaZen is
its body, and the technology it hides.
Inspired by Buddhist philosophy and teachings, the ZaZen
attempts to harmonise man and machine by providing only
essential data to the driver, like speed. Unless they
are needed, other dials and controls are hidden behind
a variable translucency dashboard. Out of sight, out of
mind. The entire one piece roof of the ZaZen also uses
this technology, and at the touch of a button becomes
opaque.
The rear brake light on the Rinspeed ZaZen sees the first
use of holographic lighting on a car, an innovation which
Bayer MaterialScience, who developed the technology, hope
to see introduced to more vehicles in the future.
And finally, the mineral white paintwork of the ZaZen,
incorporating millions of precious Swarovski crystals
is protected by a self healing polyurethane clear coat.
