The Pininfarina Eta Beta was a concept which represented
a fresh approach to designing a fuel efficient, practical
and versatile city car.
The Eta Beta featured an aluminium space frame, and also
aluminium doors, bonnet and tailgate. The rest of the
body panels were plastic. The use of lightweight materials
throughout helped keep the weight to a minimum, which
in turn further improved fuel economy.
Powering the Pininfarina Eta Beta was a hybrid drivetrain
which consisted of a 61 horsepower 1.1 litre 4-cylinder
engine borrowed from the Fiat Cinquecento and two 12.5
kW in wheel electric motors. Thanks to this setup the
Eta Beta was in fact four wheel drive. The front wheels
were powered by the internal combustion engine, while
the electric motors drove the rear wheels.
