The Mo.Tel (MObile hoTEL) was a creation
of Rob Millington, a Graduate of the Transport and Product
design course at Coventry University.
The Mo.Tel is an original take on the standard caravan.
According to Rob "Caravanning is stale and boring,
and I wanted to design something that could add a little
spark and attract new people to caravanning. I wanted
to effectively design a hotel room on wheels, something
that just says quality as soon as you step in."
The styling of the Mo.Tel was inspired by the iconic Airstream
caravans and 1950s styling elements. This influence is
highlighted by the use of whitewall tires, aerodynamic
wheel covers and sleek minimalistic proportions. The idea
is that the Mo.Tel would instantly stand out from the
characterless white caravans which currently fill modern
day caravan parks and bring back a sense of individuality.
The interior features of the Mo.Tel would not look out
of place in a chic upmarket studio apartment. High quality
materials and contemporary furniture are used throughout
and the overall feeling couldn't be more different to
standard caravan interiors.
The bedroom of the Mo.Tel is located above the main living
area, use of this space is made possible by the electronically
operated pop up roof. Access to the bedroom is gained
via the movable ladder at the end of the kitchen area.
There is a comfortable sized bathroom and a clean kitchen
with fold out breakfast bar area. In the main living area
there is a sofa which also doubles as a bed with a second
slide out mattress. Stackable chairs provide versatile
seating options. Additional space is provided via the
fold down rear panel which makes a decking area which
can be used as both an inside and outside space.
The Mo.Tel is constructed from a lightweight GRP foam
core sandwich body which sits on top of a steel tubular
chassis.
