The Mercedes-Benz F-Cell Roadster was created by a team
of over 150 trainees and dual education system students
at the Sindelfingen Mercedes-Benz plant in south-west
Germany.
The development of the Mercedes-Benz F-Cell Roadster concept
involved junior employees from the fields of automotive
mechatronics, model-building, electronics, coating technology,
manufacturing mechanics, product design, and interior
appointments. The main aim of the project was to develop
alternative drive systems by using hands-on training.
The exterior styling of the F-Cell Roadster concept is
influenced by a wide variety of vehicles from different
eras. The large spoked wheels are designed to mimic the
wheels found on the Benz Patent Motor Car from 1886, while
the sleek nosecone is inspired by modern day Formula 1
cars.
The interior also has features which come from entirely
opposite ends of the automotive spectrum. Carbon-fibre
bucket seats are covered in hand stitched leather and
suspended over a wooden-slat floor. Control of the F-Cell
Roadster is not through a conventional steering wheel
and pedals, instead a joystick mounted in between the
seats provides all the vital control functions like steering,
acceleration and braking.
Powering the Mercedes-Benz F-Cell Roadster is an emission-free
fuel cell system located at the rear. This unit puts out
1.6 hp (1.2 kW) and gives the vehicle a rather sedate
16 mph (25 km/h) top speed. However at 217 mph (350 km/h)
the range is rather impressive.
