The Mazda MX-5 Superlight is a stripped down show car
which was first revealed at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.
The vehicle was designed at Mazdas studio in Oberursel,
Germany.
The Superlight is a vehicle designed to capture the essence
of the MX-5. Essentially lightweight, no frills and impeccable
handling. The weight reduction has also been designed
to improve fuel economy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Powering the Mazda MX-5 Superlight is a 1.8 litre, 4 cylinder
engine which puts out 126 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm, and
167 Nm of torque @ 4,500 rpm. Mated to a five speed manual
gearbox this gives the car a 0-60 mph time of 8.9 seconds.
The exterior design of the Mazda MX-5 Superlight is basically
the same as the standard MX-5 but the windscreen, side
windows and roof have been deleted, and behind the seats
are a pair of integrated roll bars. The suspension settings
have also been altered to offer a sportier drive.
The interior of the MX-5 Superlight is where most of the
weight saving comes from. Racing spec lightweight carbon
fibre seats replace the standard units, and the dashboard
has been replaced with a single piece carbon fibre dash
which also helps cover the space left when the windscreen
was removed.
