Mazda
MX-5 Speedster
The Mazda MX-5 Speedster was one of two MX-5 based concept cars
unveiled by the company at the 2015 SEMA show in Las Vegas. The concept
is also extremely similar in vein to the MX-5
Superlight concept from 2009 which was based on the previous generation
car.
The MX-5 Speedster was partially inspired by vintage roadsters. Stripped
back and lightweight, the concept features carbon fibre doors and
seats, as well as custom 16-inch RAYS 57 Extreme Gram Lights wheels.
The MX-5 Speedster tips the scales at only 2080 lbs (943kg), and is
also 30mm lower than the standard MX-5 thanks to an adjustable K&W
coilover suspension system.
The concept also features a Racing Beat center-mount exhaust, Brembo
brake calipers and vented discs, an interior retrimmed in Alcantara
and carbon fiber Mu-Len Delta seats. However the most radical alteration
is the removal of the regular windscreen and the fitting of a small
wind deflector.
Powering the Mazda MX-5 Speedster is a Skyactive-G 2.0 litre 4-cylinder
engine mated to a manual transmission.
The concept is based on the all-new MX-5 debuted earlier in 2015.
Commenting on the concept Ken Saward, design manager at Mazda North
America said, "The all-new 2016 MX-5 served as a blank canvas for
our design team to create some truly one-of-a-kind cars, yet our SEMA
concepts remain true to more than 25 years of MX-5 heritage."
