Local Motors represents a completely
new type of car company |

The Local Motors Rally Fighter is a vehicle born out of
a worldwide design competition, and a collective of automotive
designers and enthusiasts.
Based in Wareham, Massachusetts, Local Motors bills itself
as a new type of car company. "Revolutionary yet
simple, Local Motors creates a direct connection with
customers who guide design development based on personal
desires. The outcome of this open, collaborative process
is meaningful, exciting cars designed specifically for
car enthusiasts in local areas."
Local Motors not only hopes to change the way cars are
designed, but also how they are produced. Instead of just
one or two main production facilities, Local Motors have
plans to set up lots of 'micro factories' and base them
in areas where demand for the vehicle is highest. The
vehicles would be built at a rate which keeps supply and
demand in perfect balance. No surplus, no waiting lists.
If Local Motors can pull this off - and I hope they can
- they will have made the biggest change to the way cars
are manufactured since Henry Ford came up with the production
line.
The Rally Fighter is the first vehicle destined to go
into production. Designed by Sangho Kim, the Rally Fighter
is a street-legal off-road racer specifically designed
to handle the terrain of the deserts of Southwest America.
The Rally Fighter is based around a welded steel tubular
space frame chassis and uses a combination of thermoplastic
and carbon
fibre body panels.
The sleek bodywork was inspired by World War II aircraft,
and more specifically the P-51 Mustang. Even the shape
of the cabin and the roofline (especially when viewed
from the side) has a shape similar to that of a fighter
aircraft cockpit.
The interior of the Rally Fighter has seating for either
4 adults, or 2 adults and 3 children. A dramatic dash
display which uses two intersecting aluminium panels helps
make the interior design as exciting as the exterior.
Powering the Local Motors Rally Fighter is a 3.0 litre,
inline 6-cylinder, twin-turbo diesel engine sourced from
BMW. This unit produces 265 horsepower and 425 lb-ft of
torque @ 1,750
rpm. A six speed automatic transmission send the power
to the rear wheels.
Production of the Local Motors Rally Fighter is scheduled
to commence in the middle of 2010.
