The Izh 2012 is a conceptual motorbike which was created
by Igor Chak, a talented Russian designer based in Los
Angeles, California. Chak's previous freelance work includes
the Honda CB750 (2015)
from 2009.
Izh is primarily a weapons manufacturer, their best known
monstrous product is probably the Kalashnikov assault
rifle. However the company also produced more civilized
products, like automobiles and motorcycles, before the
fall of the USSR. And it wasn't just some backwoods operation
pumping out a few bikes each year. In fact Izh produced
around 11 million bikes from the late 1920s to the early
1990s. Yet despite it's high production numbers and well-known
status inside Russia, in most Western countries its unheard
of.
Chak's concept is designed to help change that. The Izh
2012 is a modern interpretation of the company's 1929
Izh-1 model. And although visually the two bikes are light-years
apart, they do share a similar profile due to the unusual
exhaust location on the Izh 2012, and the empty space
underneath the seat. But that's about it.
The Izh 2012 is packed full of features and technology,
enough to put NASA to shame. The proposed engine is an
850 cc V-twin which produces 140 horsepower. But the really
interesting part is the idea that 50 percent of the engine
would be formed from heat resistant and highly reinforced
plastic. In addition the wiring and circuitry of the engine
is built into the casting to reduce the chance of damage
or corrosion. The engine also gets a automatic fuel regulation
system to provide the best MPG, and if that wasn't enough
there's a brushless 80kW electric motor housed within
the rear wheel. Lithium Sulfate batteries located below
and behind the engine provide the power for the electric
motor.
Cutting edge and unusual technology isn't just confined
to the drivetrain however. The braking system of the Izh
2012 concept consists of magnetically actuated calipers
- with a hydraulic backup. While the clutch, brakes and
throttle are all controlled electronically.
To help protect the rider in the unfortunate case of an
accident, the Izh 2012 concept features a dual airbag
system. The front airbag acts as a cushion for the whole
front end of the bike - in much the same way crumple zones
of a car help dissipate some of the initial impact force.
The second airbag pops out of the fuel tank and cushions
the rider. The protrusions on this airbag are designed
to catch the rider as they are thrown forward.
Obviously it's better if you don't have to rely on the
airbags at all to stay safe. So Chak has also given the
bike a number of active safety features designed to keep
you out of trouble. There's a proximity radar system which
works in conjunction with a forward facing onboard camera.
When activated this system helps regulate the bike's speed
and compensate for a reduction in velocity of vehicles
ahead. Just like a radar controlled cruise control.
The Izh 2012 also has blind spot detectors, vibrating
handlebars which warn of cars which are very close behind,
traction control which automatically adjusts to compensate
for ice, water or dirt, and of course ABS brakes.
Still doesn't sound technical enough? Well it's also got
an augmented reality, touch-screen display which also
has night vision, potential hazard warning, and GPS capabilities.
Oh yeah and the bike's onboard computer can also be connected
to your smart phone so the display can be used (when the
bikes stationary of course) in conjunction with your iPhone,
Blackberry etc for surfing the web, watching videos or
writing emails.
On top of all that it looks pretty cool too.
