The Ford Explorer America is a concept SUV which first
appeared at the 2008 Detroit Motor Show. The Explorer
America concept builds on the groundwork's laid by the
production Ford Explorer which has been around since the
early 1990's.
The styling of the Explorer America is far more modern
than its predecessors, and under the skin is a more advanced
and economical drivetrain which offers 20 - 30 percent
fuel savings depending on engine choice. The Explorer
America concept would be available with either a 4 cylinder
2 litre engine with EcoBoost technology delivering 275
hp and 280 lb-ft of torque or, as a premium engine, a
3.5 litre V-6 delivering about 340 hp. To further improve
fuel economy electric power assisted steering (EPAS) decreases
fuel consumption by around 5 percent.
The chassis of the Explorer America concept is also upgraded,
changing from a heavy, dated body-on-frame construction
to a lighter and more agile monocoque
design.
Inside the Ford Explorer America concept several handy
features can be found, including: single-touch stackable,
sliding seats that allow for convenient access to the
second row; a work table with seats can be deployed from
the tailgate; and a three-dimensional compass and navigation
unit with a topographical map built right into the instrument
panel. Access to the Ford Explorer America concept is
through conventional front doors and sliding rear passenger
doors.
While the 2008 Ford Explorer America is just a concept
for the moment it is expected that the replacement for
the current Ford Explorer might borrow several features
and styling cues from the America concept.
